Friends, fireworks and funnel cakes! That's what Washington's annual July Third gathering on the Square is all about. Streets were closed in town for thrill rides and food trucks, and the Square was pedestrian-only as thousands gathered for the night-time pyro display. Early in the morning, a few hardy souls organized an impromptu parade around the Square, with Army combat veteran Luis Ochoa, who hikes more than 10 miles up Greensboro Road to the Wilkes Courthouse each Memorial Day and July Fourth honoring all his fellow veterans. USA Today called it one of the best small-town Independence Day celebrations in the country, and it just keeps getting better.
