No need for Washington’s voters to complain they have no choices in the city
elections this Fall. Depending on which district, there will be at least eight names in
District Two, or ten in District One on the ballot.
Mayor Bill deGolian is not seeking reelection, so that race is wide-open. One of the
four candidates are political newcomer, Ken Parris. Local medical
clinic owner Bruce Bailey previously ran for City Council as did Angela Booker; Rev. Larry Hill entered the race
after resigning his District One seat on City Council, with two years remaining in his
term.
Hill’s remaining time on Council will be filled in a special election, added to the
November ballot following approval at an August 31 Council special meeting. Qualifying
dates for Hill’s unexpired term are September 12-13-14 at the office of the City Clerk.
In District One, Brent Bailey, Devito Owens, Delilah Wilburn, Johnny Wilkinson,
and John Wylie will be competing for the seat currently held by Maceo Mahoney, who is
seeking reelection. Mahoney had previously announced he was running for Mayor and many signs stating such could be seen around Washington. He has instead decided to stay in the Council race. The seat goes to the candidate with the most votes;
there is no runoff provision in this election.
There are a pair of open seats in District Two; the terms of Council members
Charles Wagner and Matthew Denard expire this year. There are four names on the
ballot for these seats: David Fisher, Newt Gunter, Kimberly Cork, and Juan Jackson.
The two leading vote-getters will be seated on Council.
Newly elected city officers are typically sworn-in at the first Council session of the
new year; Hill’s replacement will begin serving shortly after the November 7 election,
subject to certification.
City Clerk Wanda Dingler announced there will be a Special Election Tuesday,
November 7, 2023, to fill the un-expired term of District 1 Council member Larry Hill.
Qualifying fee for this office is $108.00. Qualifying dates will be September 12 and 13,
2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and September 14, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00
p.m. in the Office of the City Clerk. You must be a resident of District 1 to qualify for this
Council position.
