You may have noticed a new logo and a new name on the window of the ice cream shop on the square in Washington, Georgia.  Scott and Meg Barnum purchased the shop in November 2023 and have made a few changes. They heard the shop was for sale last fall and even though neither of them had owned a food service business before, they decided to take a chance. “We really felt it was important to keep businesses open on the square” Scott said. He and Meg agree that a thriving local business community is important and they are happy to be new members of it.

The Barnums moved to Washington from Birmingham, Alabama in 2022 where Scott was a professor and researcher at the University of Alabama. “This is completely different from anything we have done before” Meg said.  They showed me around the shop and pointed out the changes they have made. A fresh coat of paint and art depicting an unmistakable theme honoring the town’s namesake, George Washington. The art alone is good reason to stop in, if the delicious, homemade ice cream wasn’t enough. I also got to peek behind the scenes and saw the Emory Thompson ice cream machine that is one of the very best in the business. Both Scott and Meg agreed, it is fun trying out new flavor combinations. On any given day there are at least a dozen varieties to try and the options for enjoying are many as well. From single scoops, sundaes with toppings, shakes and pints to go, there is an option for every ice cream lover.  I took a pint each of Coffee Crunch and Salted Caramel Pecan, home with me and both flavors were delicious.

Washington Creamery ice cream is also available at Strickland Pride Produce in Crawford, Last Stop Coffee and Provisions in Tignal, the Collective and the Nest both on the square in Washington.

Business hours are Wednesday and Thursday 1:00-7:00 pm, Friday and Saturday 1:00-8:00 pm and Sunday 1:00-5:00 pm. They hope to expand hours in the summer.

They also are happy to host birthday parties and other gatherings in the shop.
